Oh winds of the Jawlan Come quench my heart My heart is burning Quench the fires of exile When the sound of the city Is louder than my voice Its rhythms are faster than my heartbeats You hold my hands Embrace my soul And lift me higher And we are here Flying… Leaving everything behind We’re calm and the world awaits us As we forget our worldly worries Oh winds of the Jawlan Come quench my heart My heart is burning Quench the fires of exile When I feel like a stranger Between the house’s walls My eyes are occupied with surrounding buildings She holds my hands and reminds me Of our place above And we are here Flying… Leaving everything behind We’re calm and the world awaits us As we forget our worldly worries

On loneliness and death Everything between them And everything between us What voice shall I sing in? Which melody will carry me Which word shall I chose Before everything falls apart? On love and life at the end of this song On our departure, while plastic remains And the winter which passed is the same as now But we are the ones who forget Oh oh On birds that land on city rooftops Our abandoned homes, which we inhabit On my soul which dances with a hidden breeze Carrying our names with it On places that do not return And others which recover The time which taught me To trust in us To love forgetfulness, see it as freedom And contain all my dark thoughts To learn to forgive, even the loss And to turn on the light Oh oh Summer storms

Ishtar 04:24
Before the first sin After you think twice Valleys of lava flowing Underneath the feet Pulling me into the depth of a valley She swims with me She swims with me Ishtar, drags me around Ishtar, her gaze is enough Ishtar, comes only at night When the morning comes, she leaves me behind Like ice on a coal She burns out and I evaporate She leaves wine at the bottom of the glass Finishes a cigarette in three drags Pulling me into the depths of a valley She swims with me She swims with me Ishtar, drags me around Ishtar, her gaze is enough Ishtar, comes only at night When the morning comes, she leaves me behind Ishtar is not yours, Ishtar is not mine We are all butterflies, stuck in her net Ishtar loves you, and she sometimes loves me But essentially, Ishtar loves her freedom Ishtar is not yours, Ishtar is not mine We are all butterflies, stuck in her net Ishtar loves you, and she sometimes loves me And her freedom is light When we get close It burns us

about

Inspired by Haya Zaatry’s great-great-grandmother’s surname, Rahawan is an album transcending the complicated threads of history, time and geography and paying tribute to generations of mothers and matriarchs.

Nazira Rahawan (1890-1972) who lends her name to the album was born and raised in Damascus (Syria) and lived between Nazareth and Haifa (Palestine). Nazira was the last person within Haya’s family who lived and roamed the land freely, before the forceful imposition of man made borders.

The album is conceptually designed to reclaim a sense of freedom and belonging which Haya Zaatry herself never had the chance to experience. The spark of “Rahawan” starts in an innocent internal space of emotions and musicality, and gradually progresses through temporalities of maturity, with all the sorrows, losses, love and oppression surrounding Haya’s everyday life. Beyond the physical space, the content of the album also transgresses different generations and centuries, to tell of times past and present.

Based on an ongoing research process, pouring the architecture of history and geography into musical practice through cadences, rhythms and tempos, the album’s songs cement the Palestinian dialect with the heavenly cosmic melodies and raw earthly rhythms.
